The Vampire facelift is also known as known as PRP or platelet rich plasma. PRP is a treatment whereby a patient’s own plasma is applied via individual injections, topical application and/or Micro-Needling. By combining PRP with Micro-Needling or fractional laser resurfacing micro-channels are introduced to allow PRP (platelet-rich-plasma) to be absorbed more effectively. This significantly multiplies the collagen production leaving the skin tighter, thicker and brighter.
What is the Vampire FaceLift®?
The Vampire FaceLift® is a term used to describe the use of your body’s own blood cells, Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP, in combination with FDA-approved fillers to rejuvenate the face. As we age we lose collagen in the skin. This leads to fine lines, hollows and changes in skin texture and tone. The platelet cells obtained and used in the Vampire FaceLift® secrete growth factors that stimulate new collagen in the skin for a refreshed and rejuvenated appearance.
How is the Vampire FaceLift® performed?
Dr. Hessler performs the Vampire FaceLift® in Palo Alto in her northern California plastic surgery office. The procedure entails taking a small amount of blood from your arm. The blood cells are then processed to obtain highly purified cells that are responsible for collagen creation in the skin. This purified material is then injected into the areas of concern on the face. If more volume is needed, a hyaluronic acid filler material is added to provide greater lifting power.
Where can PRP be used?
We use the PRP Vampire Facelift in our Palo Alto plastic surgery office to treat a variety of facial concerns. Areas that need subtle volume enhancement such as tear troughs, can be treated with PRP. This serum can also help with improvement of dark circles around the under eye area, and area that is notoriously difficult to treat. PRP can be used to help with acne scars, increase collagen in the skin and enhance the overall glow and thickness of the skin.
PRP can also be used to optimize the results from hair transplant procedures.
What areas of the face does the Vampire FaceLift® treat?
Many patients in the San Francisco Bay Area are using the Vampire FaceLift® / Vampire Facial to rejuvenate the face. The areas most commonly treated include:
- PRP/Vampire FaceLift® for lower eyelid lines
- PRP/Vampire FaceLift® for dark under-eye circles
- PRP/Vampire FaceLift® for skin texture
- PRP/Vampire FaceLift® for lip lines
What can I expect before and after Vampire Facelift?
When you come in for your Vampire Facelift at Hessler Plastic Surgery in Palo Alto, we will assess your skin and make recommendations based on your specific needs and concerns. Once a treatment plan has been established, a topical numbing cream is applied to the area. While the area numbs, a small amount of blood is drawn and the plasma is separated. If injections of the plasma are being done to specific areas, the injections are performed first and the remaining plasma is then spread out over the entire area with a micro-needling treatment.
Immediately following your PRP treatment, you may have some mild redness, slight swelling and tight feeling to the skin. The redness, tightness and swelling can last up to 2 days and may be followed by some slight peeling. As always with any injection, there is a risk of bruising. However, there are things that may be done to minimize this risk. First, if not medically necessary, discontinue the use of any blood thinning products such as but not limited to aspirin, ibuprofen, Aleve, fish oil and omega 3 vitamins for one-two weeks prior to your treatment. Tylenol may be taken if needed as this does not increase your chance of bruising. Another method to decrease the chance of bruising would be the use of a cannula with a blunt end instead of a needle to perform the injections. A cannula is not only great for minimizing the risk of bruising but also provides additional safety particularly when injecting near or around the eyes. Dr. Hessler has been a leader in the field of injection safety for fillers and has been asked to lecture and demonstrate her injection techniques including the use of cannula’s at national plastic surgery meetings throughout the United States.
If you have any questions regarding post procedure care or are looking for recommendations regarding skin care to maximize the results of your Vampire Facelift, Dr. Hessler and any of our well trained staff members will be happy to review a treatment plan with you.
Can I Go to Work After a Vampire Facelift?
It is not necessary to take any time off from work. In fact, most patients can return to their regular routines without any discomfort. Some patients experience mild redness and/or swelling that usually subsides within 24 hours. Bruising and discomfort are always a possibility with procedures involving needles or injections, including Vampire Facelift. But keep in mind, these effects will go away sooner rather than later.
PRP and Hair Loss
There has been much excitement about the use of PRP to as a treatment for hair loss. Multiple scientific studies are evaluating the use of platelet rich plasma to stimulate hair growth and to enhance the response from hair transplantation procedures. At Hessler Plastic Surgery in Palo Alto we perform PRP injections to the scalp both as isolated injections as a non-surgical treatment for hair loss and in addition to hair transplantation to optimize the results and the amount of hair growth.
It is recommended to schedule an appointment at our Hair Transplant Center to review the causes and best options to treat thinning hair and hair loss for men and women.

What is the Vampire Facial?
In Dr. Jill Hessler’s Palo Alto office we can combine the Vampire FaceLift® with the Vampire Facial. This combination treatment further enhances the skin. During this combined treatment a dual level of effect occurs. The platelet rich plasma matrix is injected into the deeper areas of lines and concerns and the same material is infused into the skin over the entire face with our highly trained medical estheticians to provide a radiant glow to the skin.
Vampire FaceLift® vs. Surgical Facelift
The Vampire FaceLift® is a completely different procedure from the surgical facelift. The Vampire FaceLift® is used to provide subtle volume to the face and improve the texture of the skin. The Vampire FaceLift® does not address neck laxity or significant skin excess. If you desire to remove extra skin from under the neck or around the jowls then a surgical facelift is likely a better option. Dr. Hessler will discuss the advantages of both the Vampire FaceLift® and neck lift procedures during your scheduled consultation in her Palo Alto office.
