Ultherapy, sometimes called Ulthera, is a revolutionary new technology for visible lifting and tightening of facial skin. It is often referred to as the ultrasound facelift, the non-invasive facelift or even the weekend facelift. Palo Alto patients now have access to Ultherapy, which uses ultrasound technology, with its significant history of safety and efficacy, in a completely new way to lift and elevate the facial tissue – just as face lift surgery can do.

How does Ultherapy work?

Ultherapy uses ultrasound energy in a completely new fashion. In traditional ultrasound the waves are non-focused, which means they travel in a straight line directly out from the source. Ultherapy, the ultrasound facelift, uses targeted ultrasound that focuses the ultrasound waves down to a focal point. At that focal point Ultherapy creates a microthermal coagulation zone that precisely heats the tissue to cause contraction and tightening of the collagen in the skin.

Do I see Ultherapy results immediately?

Most of Dr. Jill Hessler’s Palo Alto Ulthera patients see an initial immediate improvement in the neck and jowl area. Some of those results are permanent and some are temporary. The contraction, tightening and creation of new collagen takes between two to six months to fully manifest. These results, once they occur, can be quite long lasting.

How do I know if I am a candidate for Ultherapy?

When most patients come in to our Palo Alto office for an Ultherapy consult, they typically complain of starting to see some relaxation of the neck skin, formation of early jowls and descent of the brow. The Ultherapy treatment works best on patients with mild laxity or sagging of the skin, although we have seen excellent results in patients with more significant skin redundancy.

The Ultherapy treatment is a great treatment for those patients who desire some skin tightening and want to reverse the signs of aging, but are busy with work, kids or social activities and don’t have the ability to retreat for the week or two required from facelift surgery or other more aggressive lasers.

Can I go back to work immediately?

For most patients there is no “downtime” with the Ultherapy skin tightening procedure. You can anticipate mild redness of skin that generally lasts less than a half hour. Rarely, small raised bumps or welts can occur on the skin in those patients with sensitive skin. These generally go away immediately with ice application; occasionally an antihistamine such as Claritin can be used. Rarely patients have experienced a slight bruising under the skin. It is helpful to stay off any aspirin- or ibuprofen-containing product for one week prior to your Palo Alto Ultherapy treatment with Dr. Hessler.

What can I expect in the weeks following the procedure?

Following your Ultherapy face lift treatment, most patients feel the immediate tightening of the skin and can sense the lifting action. The skin can feel slightly numb in the treated areas for a couple of days to a couple of weeks. This is not noticeable to most people unless they are touching the skin, in which case they can sense the numbness. Occasionally there is mild soreness over the jawbone and forehead areas treated with Ultherapy, which can last the same amount of time. Both of the above symptoms are mild and improve with time.

Is the procedure painful?

There is some discomfort with your Ultherapy treatment. Pain thresholds can vary significantly; some patients report very minimal tenderness while other patients note more significant discomfort. Initial studies with the treatment were performed with Tylenol alone for any discomfort. This can work for some patients. To make the procedure most comfortable, Dr. Hessler can provide you with medications to relax you and relieve the pain during your Ultherapy treatment in our Palo Alto office and accredited Palo Alto plastic surgery center. You will still be awake for your Ultherapy treatment but you will need a driver to take you home if you take any pain medications. You can discuss which pain relief option is best for you during your Ultherapy consultation with Dr. Jill Hessler.

How long do results last?

Most patients only require one session in order to see the younger-looking skin and results they seek. However, it is important to remember that skin continues to age even after your Ultherapy session. In order to maintain your rejuvenated appearance, Dr. Hessler recommends scheduling touch-up sessions. The frequency of your follow-up treatments will depend on your skin’s aging process. Certain lifestyle habits (e.g., sunscreen use, not smoking, maintaining a healthy weight) can also prolong your results. Dr. Hessler can make his recommendations on touchup treatments and lifestyle habits to follow during a consultation, where he will conduct a full assessment of your skin.
