Also serving patients in San Jose and the San Francisco Bay Area
A facelift, also referred to as a rhytidectomy, is a surgery performed to remove the extra skin and wrinkles of the jowl area, lower neck and cheeks. Not all of our San Francisco Bay Area facelift patients need every area addressed as part of the facelift surgery. Operating on just one selective area can often provide benefits to the other areas while decreasing the incision length and accelerating the recovery time. Facelift: Is It For Me?
Heredity, environmental factors, and medical conditions along with sun and smoke exposure can accelerate the aging process. During normal aging, the amount of collagen and elastin in your skin begins to decrease in overall amount and production in your twenties. Environmental factors such as sun exposure damage the collagen and elastin fibers, weakening them and causing the skin to relax more. This results in a loose and sagging appearance of the skin. With loss of the elastin fibers in the face, the facial skin is no longer able to “snap back” into its previous youthful position.
A facelift surgery tightens the underlying support structures underneath the skin to provide a long-lasting result. The overlying skin is then redraped to create a more youthful silhouette and contour to the face. Dr. Hessler will demonstrate the incisions on your face during your facelift consultation at offices. For most patients the incision is placed in a crease along the skin just in front of the ear and extending behind the ear. For the male facelift candidate, the incisions are adjusted to accommodate the hair growth on a man’s beard. For female facelift patients, Dr. Hessler uses a camouflage technique to hide the incisions behind the cartilage of the ear so only a limited portion of the incision is visible.
Your facelift surgery is performed at Dr. Hessler’s surgical center in Palo Alto. Our convenient location, combined with Dr. Hessler’s surgical skill, attracts numerous facelift patients from San Francisco and the surrounding areas. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia with sedation, or can be performed using general anesthesia provided by a physician anesthesiologist. The latter approach is often used when other procedures, such as brow lift, eyelid lift, fat transfer, or rhinoplasty are combined with the facelift procedure.
In general, facelift surgery is not a painful process. The first day or two following your facelift surgery you may experience some discomfort. Most of our facelift San Francisco patients notice a feeling of tightness but not significant pain. Dr. Hessler will prescribe pain medications to diminish any pain. Depending on the extent of your surgery, you will have a bandage wrapped around you face for the first couple of days following your facelift and neck lift surgery. You will need to have someone stay with you for the night following surgery. If you do not live in the Bay area, we recommend you stay nearby in one of the many hotels in the San Francisco area. We can provide a list of hotels that provide a discreet environment during the healing process. If you need additional assistance around the time of your cosmetic facelift surgery we can refer you to a trained nurse who provides comprehensive care during the time surrounding your surgery.
