What is Ultherapy?

In short, Ultherapy is a non-invasive face and neck lift. It’s a safe, FDA approved ultrasound therapy treatment that uses sound waves to regenerate collagen, tighten the skin, and slow down the aging process. Ultrasound waves are focused deeply into the skin to target the areas that are usually targeted by facelift procedure. The ultrasound waves penetrate through skin and create underlying channels of ultrasound waves to visibly lift and tighten the skin.

How does Ultherapy work?

Ultherapy uses ultrasound energy in a completely new way. In traditional ultrasound, the waves are non-focused — which means they travel in a straight line directly out from the source.

In Ultherapy, the ultrasound waves target a focal point. At that focal point, Ultherapy creates a microthermal coagulation zone that precisely heats the tissue (without damaging the surrounding dermis and tissue) to cause contraction and tightening of the collagen in the skin. This process renews and strengthens the existing collagen.

Ultherapy treatment details

When you arrive for your Ultherapy appointment, your skin will be cleansed and marked to help guide Dr. Hessler as she treats you. You will be made comfortable on a medical chair, and gel will be applied to the Ultherapy handpiece. The machine will start, and Dr. Hessler will apply the device directly to your skin. The sensation will vary from patient to patient. Some report feeling only a mild tingling sensation, while others note more significant discomfort. During your treatment, Dr. Hessler will check with you to make sure you are feeling okay. Most Ultherapy treatments last 30 minutes to one hour, and you can return to your regular day directly afterwards.

Side effects

Because Ultherapy is completely non-invasive, there is no bruising; however, there may be some redness in the treated areas for about half an hour following your treatment. Most patients feel the immediate tightening of the skin and can sense the lifting action. The skin may feel slightly numb in the treated areas for a couple of days to a couple of weeks. There is also occasionally mild soreness over the jawbone and forehead areas.

Results

Most patients see an immediate improvement after their Ultherapy treatment, but skin tightening and creation of new collagen takes between 2 to 6 months to become fully apparent. The final results can last about two years; however, it’s important to be aware that your skin will continue to age even after your Ultherapy session. In order to maintain your rejuvenated appearance, touch-up treatments may be needed.
