Eyelid surgery is one of Dr. Hessler’s top procedures, and a specific area of focus for her.

Key benefits of blepharoplasty

  • Removes drooping skin and puffiness of the eyelids
  • Corrects under-eye bags and dark circles
  • Corrects fine lines around the eyes
  • Removes excess skin that is impacting vision
  • Delivers a more youthful, awake, friendly appearance

What is blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) is an anti-aging procedure that is performed on either the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. With age, the eyelids can have a very aging effect on the entire face.

Sagging skin around the eyes or puffy eyelids can take away the beauty of the eyes, and leave behind an expression that constantly appears to be sad, angry, or tired. Blepharoplasty refreshes and rejuvenates the eyes, and can also correct excess eyelid skin that may be impairing the vision.

Why do men get eyelid surgery?

There’s a reason that eyelid surgery is the fourth most popular cosmetic procedure in the U.S. The eyes are the most expressive part of the face — but also one of the first areas to show serious signs of aging. This is partially because the skin in the eye area is so delicate.

When performed by a skilled facial surgeon, a male blepharoplasty can help a patient look ten years younger, more awake and friendly, open-eyed and attractive. In short, eyelid surgery can return the sparkle to your eyes.

Blepharoplasty procedure details

Blepharoplasty is performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with mild sedation. It generally takes 1 to 2 hours. In men, the blepharoplasty eyelid incision is placed closer to the eyelid lash line. This helps maintain a masculine look while still rejuvenating the periocular area. Dr. Hessler will either remove or re-adjust fat, excise excess skin, and tighten the muscles. The incisions will then be gently closed with sutures. For lower eyelid surgery, Dr. Hessler will make incisions under the eyelash line or inside the lower eyelids to reduce puffiness and under-eye bags. Upper and lower eyelid surgery can be done separately, or together.

Recovery

Most patients need about a week off of work and regular activities. After one week, your sutures will be removed.

During recovery, patients may experience minimal pain, blurred vision, redness, tired eyes, swelling, dry eyes, and/or bruising. These side effects are not dangerous, and will subside quickly. If you wear contact lenses, you will not be able to wear them for two weeks. Exercise can be resumed in two weeks.
