What is follicular hair transplant?

Follicular unit transplantation, also known as the “strip method”, removes an entire strip of hair from the back of the scalp. This strip is then divided into multiple hair grafts, which are then implanted into the areas where the hair is thinning, balding, or receding. The grafts are placed 1 to 4 hairs at a time.

Is follicular unit transplant right for you?

If you’re in Palo Alto, San Jose, or the Bay Area and you are interested in a follicular unit transplant, it’s important to be aware that the procedure leaves behind a linear scar across the back of the scalp which will be visible if your hair is very short. Although this scar can be made as minimally visible as possible, if this linear scar is out of the question for you, you may be a better candidate for a follicular unit extraction (FUE) procedure.

FUT treatment details

When you arrive for your FUT treatment, your hair will be shaved or cut in the area where the follicles will be taken. After this, a local anesthetic will be administered to numb the area. Next, the strip of tissue will be taken from the scalp. This donor tissue is removed in a single thin strip, and the particular tissue taken will be very carefully chosen based on specific factors that are needed to ensure the follicles’ survival rate. Aesthetic factors will also be taken into consideration regarding the scar.

Once the strip has been removed from the scalp, it will be dissected into separate groupings of 1 to 4 hairs. Dr. Hessler will then implant the follicles into the areas of the scalp where they are needed, using her artistic eye and expertise to make sure they are placed as naturally as possible. The recipient sites are made with a fine instrument. They are created around the existing hair so there is no need to cut it. Once the follicles have been implanted into the recipient sites, the incisions from the removed strip will then be closed.
