What is follicular unit extraction?

Follicular unit extraction is a hair transplant technique in which individual hair follicle units are taken from the back of the head. Each of these units contains about 1 to 4 hairs. The FUE method leaves the scalp intact, with no linear scar, because it doesn’t require the use of a scalpel or stitches.

Instead, it uses the NeoGraft system, a surgical machine that partially automates the FUE process. NeoGraft is the first and only FDA approved follicular unit harvesting and implantation system.

How does NeoGraft work?

NeoGraft is the most advanced technology when it comes to hair transplant treatment for address thinning hair, bald spots, and receding hairlines. The system works as an extension of Dr. Hessler’s hands, allowing for much more efficiency when it comes to hair follicle removal.

The NeoGraft system ensures less trauma than earlier technology, as well as a higher follicle survival rate after transplantation. FUE with the NeoGraft system is performed with a handpiece that creates a circular, 1-millimeter incision around the hair follicle. This effectively and safely separates the follicles from the surrounding tissue.

The device pulls the follicles out of the scalp one by one, leaving behind only a small incision point that heals on its own. The NeoGraft system has pneumatic controls that remove the hair follicles quickly — up to 3000 units in a single session. When performed by hand, only 500 can be achieved in a session.

NeoGraft FUE treatment details

When you arrive for your FUE NeoGraft appointment, the back of your head will be shaved, if it is not already. You will be given injections to numb your head, and you will then be made comfortable lying face-down on a medical chair, and Dr. Hessler will begin the procedure. The NeoGraft’s handheld device will be used to make tiny, circular incisions in the scalp to remove the hair follicles. The device is essentially a tiny tube with a sharp edge to “punch into” the scalp. The device also has a suction tube connected that helps pull the grafts out.

Once the units have been removed and prepared for transplant, Dr. Hessler will use a fine, needle-point instrument to create tiny recipient sites in the areas where hair growth is needed. She will immediately graft the hair follicles into these areas in a natural-looking pattern. The placed hair follicles can now become healthy, hair-producing follicles. After this, your head will then be dressed with surgical gauze or dressings.

Recovery

There is very little downtime and recovery from a FUE hair transplant. Some patients experience a headache for a couple of days, and you may have some swelling from the injections. Most patients return to their normal daily routine within 3 to 5 days.

Results

FUE hair transplant results typically develop over the following timeline:

7 to 10 days

The circular incisions on the scalp will be healed by this time. You may begin using regular hair products.

1 to 5 weeks

Your newly-implanted hair will shed as your hair begins a new growth cycle.

4 months

New growth becomes visible.

8 to 12 months

The new hair will be fully grown in and growing at a normal rate.
