Skin Cancer Reconstruction in Palo Alto, San Jose, and the Bay Area

At Hessler Plastic Surgery, you can receive a biopsy if you are having symptoms. Dr. Hessler performs skin cancer reconstruction to restore the skin to its previous appearance after the cancer is removed.

What is skin cancer reconstruction?

Plastic surgery goes hand-in-hand with surgical cancer excision or Mohs surgery. It is a very important part of the recovery process for patients, as it helps them feel more like themselves by repairing the noticeable wounds — often which are on the face. Skin cancer reconstruction is done at the same time of cancer removal, directly after the skin cancer is removed. The procedure repairs and closes the wounds that are caused by the cancer removal.

Skin cancer symptoms and diagnosis

Skin cancer presents as a change in the skin. This is usually a new lesion that is raised and waxy yellow, with vessels near the edges. The lesion may also be a flat red spot which is irritated, with flaking and/or crusting.

You should consider the possibility of skin cancer whenever you see a new lesion that persists longer than a month and peels, itches, or bleeds.

If you experience this, a biopsy needs to be performed. Dr. Hessler can perform a biopsy for you, which the pathologists will review.

Skin cancer reconstruction details

Dr. Hessler works with dermatologists and Mohs surgeons who remove the skin cancer. Once they have removed it, she performs the plastic surgery repair and closure. The procedure is usually done under local anesthesia with sedation, and takes 1 to 3 hours, depending on the how large the wound is, and where it is on the body.

  • Lips
  • Forehead
  • Hands
  • Ears

Recovery

Most patients are able to return to work within a few days, although recovery will vary from person to person.
