The mid-face is the region of the face below the eyes to the mouth. The appearance of the mid-face is a result of the deep bony skeletal structure, the amount of facial fat, the amount of muscle and the skin character. As we age, the facial fat in the midface decreases disproportionally to the rest of our body. The lack of volume in the mid-face can deepen the nasolabial folds (the grooves by our mouth) and lead to a tired, aged appearance. Rejuvenation of the mid-face involves replacing the descended fat pockets and tissue to their natural position, sometimes in combination with adding volume using fat in a fat transfer.

How is the surgery performed?

A mid-face lift can be combined with lower blepharoplasty surgery. If the lower eyelids are to be addressed at the same time, often the same incision can be used for both the lower eyelid blepharoplasty and the mid-face lift. This involves a fine incision immediately below the lash line of the lower eyelid to minimize the chance of a visible scar.

Dr. Hessler will perform a thorough exam to see if this is an option for you. The position of your eyes, any dryness to your eyes and medical ocular concerns will be evaluated.

A mid-face lift can also be performed with a small incision in the hairline at the temple and just above the ear on both sides, along with a small incision inside the mouth. Regardless of which incision is used, the goal of a mid-face lift is to re-shape the face to create a more rejuvenated and refreshed contour to the face.

What type of anesthesia is used for a mid-face lift?

The midface lift is usually performed under IV sedation. This means you do not need to have a breathing tube placed, something many patients wish to avoid. Depending on your level of comfort and any associated procedures performed, the level of anesthesia can be tailored to your individual case. Dr. Hessler only works with the most highly trained anesthesiologists and nurses to assure you receive the best care during your plastic surgery procedures.
