Ear Surgery and Earlobe Repair from Hessler Plastic Surgery

What ear surgery can accomplish

When you’re unhappy with the way your ears look, it can have a very negative impact on your self-esteem and confidence. You may try to hide them with your hair or hats — but your ears don’t have to be a problem anymore. Dr. Hessler performs skillful otoplasty and ear lobe repair procedures to correct the following conditions:

  • Protruding ears
  • Earlobes that have become elongated
  • Overly large ears
  • Misshapen ears from birth or injury

What is otoplasty?

Otoplasty (ear surgery) improves the shape, structure, position, and possibly the size of the ears to achieve a natural-looking appearance. Otoplasty should only be performed by a facial plastic surgeon, and if the procedure is for a child, it can only be performed once the child’s ears have fully developed.

What is earlobe repair?

Earlobe repair is an excellent option to restore shape for individuals whose earlobes have been elongated due to heavy earrings or large ear gauges. In some cases, dermal fillers may be used to address this issue — but if the damage is significant, surgery is a better solution.

Otoplasty surgical details

Depending on the specific condition and age of the patient, otoplasty can be performed with either sedation and local anesthesia or general anesthesia. The procedure takes about two hours.

The exact technique that Dr. Hessler uses will also be based on the age of the patient and their condition. The incisions will either be made on the back of the ears, or in the inner creases of the ears.

Recovery from otoplasty

After otoplasty, the patient will need to wear surgical dressings for a few days to protect the area. Some patients have discomfort and itchiness around their ears, but this can be managed with medication that Dr. Hessler will recommend or prescribe. It is very important that the dressings are not removed until your next office visit. Pressure and contact with the ears should be strictly avoided during this time, which may be difficult if the patient is a child.

The ears may be swollen and red when the dressings are removed, but this is normal. Once the initial dressings are removed, the patient will be provided another type of garment to wear at night for 2 to 6 weeks.

Earlobe repair surgical details

If Dr. Hessler decides that dermal filler is enough to address your earlobe concerns, the treatment will be fairly quick, with very little downtime. If surgery is needed, it can be performed with a local anesthetic, and typically takes under one hour. Earlobe repair removes the bottom of the stretched-out earlobe, along with the entire gauged area.

The excision is stitched up, and these stitches can be removed about a week after the procedure. Patients can return to work the day after surgery, and may begin exercise after one week. Very little discomfort is involved, although some do experience swelling or bruising.
