If your excess eyelid skin is drooping, sagging, or puffy, you may be unhappy with the effect it’s having on your appearance or vision.
Upper Blepharoplasty in Palo Alto, San Jose, and the Bay Area
Many individuals who struggle with sagging or puffy eyelid skin have a resting expression that looks angry, sad, or tired. Dr. Hessler’s upper blepharoplasty procedure can address these issues and restore the beauty of your eyes.
What can upper eyelid surgery accomplish?
Upper blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) is one of the procedures Dr. Hessler performs the most at her practice in Palo Alto. This surgery removes excess drooping skin and fat deposits that develop around the upper eyelids with age.
When performed by a skilled and experienced facial surgeon such as Dr. Hessler, upper blepharoplasty has the ability to:
- Create a more awake and youthful appearance
- Restore the brightness and expression of the eyes
- Correct hooding on the upper eyelid
- Decrease puffy eyelids
- Tighten and firm loose skin and lax muscles
- Lift excess skin to improve obscured vision
Upper blepharoplasty procedure details
Upper blepharoplasty generally takes about one hour, and is performed with local anesthesia and some sedation (if desired by the patient). Dr. Hessler will make an incision in the natural crease of the upper eyelid and gently remove the redundant skin. Once this has been done, she can tailor the surgery to your individual needs. Occasionally a small amount of eyelid muscle is removed to create a more defined eyelid.
If there is protruding fat into the upper eyelid, this can be excised. Dr. Hessler takes a very conservative approach in fat removal. As we study beauty and what makes a youthful appearance, we have learned that a softer contour around the bone of the eye without redundant eyelid skin gives the most natural appearance to the eyes without creating an “over-operated on” look.
Recovery
During recovery from an upper eyelid surgery, patients will most likely experience some swelling and bruising. The best way to limit this is to keep ice packs on your eyes for the first 2 to 3 days post-surgery. Patients will also need to avoid any strenuous activity for one week.
