What is periocular fat grafting?

When a patient desires more volume in the face, this can be achieved using fat from their very own body. This is known as fat grafting, or fat transfer. Fat grafting is performed in two steps: liposuction and injections. For the liposuction step, fat is removed from an area of the body where it can be spared.

This is typically the stomach, thighs, or flanks. Once the fat is removed, it will be purified, added into a syringe, and a very small amount is injected into the face to provide a beautiful volume. Specifically with periocular fat grafting, the fat is injected into the cheeks or under-eye area.

Why get periocular fat grafting?

Many patients seek out periocular fat grafting because they feel that their under-eye hollows make them appear constantly exhausted or unhealthy, even when they aren’t. Other patients choose this procedure because they want more volume in the cheeks. Many patients prefer fat grafting to dermal fillers because fat grafting uses natural filler (fat) from their own body instead of foreign substances.

Periocular fat grafting procedure details

When you arrive for your periocular fat grafting procedure, the areas to be treated will be marked to help guide Dr. Hessler. Liposuction will be performed first. It is done under either local or general anesthesia, depending on how much fat will be taken.

Liposuction involves making small incisions in the area where the fat will be taken (typically the stomach). Once the appropriate amount of fat has been removed, it will be purified and put into a syringe. The liposuction incisions will be sutured and dressed.

Dr. Hessler will then administer the injections into the periocular area using a blunt-tipped cannula. She will administer very precise placement of the fat grafts into the desired areas.

Recovery

After your periocular fat grafting procedure, you can expect to return to work within one week. During recovery time, you will have some swelling and bruising at the injection sites. Dressings will need to be kept on the donor site where the fat was removed for a few days. Those who undergo periocular fat grafting should be aware that results are gradual and may take up to 12 weeks to become apparent.
